There are lots of fun ways to review the material that you've taught your students in science: games like Jeopardy and Who Wants to be a Millionaire or websites like Kahoot and Quizizz. But what about using games to really teach our students about making inferences through induction and deduction? In this session Nate will be quickly going over some games and playing some others with you; this way, by the time you leave, you'll have seen or played roughly twenty games to promote students' ability to make inferences in science. Note: Though some of these could be used in Div II, most of these games are best suited for Div III and IV.

The goal of this session is to help K-12 educators learn about computational thinking (CT), how it differs in some ways and connects in other ways with computer science (CS) and how it can be integrated into a variety of subject areas. Some of the questions and activities will ask you to think about how you might approach things in your own classroom. I’ll provide lots of scaffolding and support to help you create a lesson in your own classroom that involves computational thinking.

Students develop a deeper sense of how a system works by interacting with variables and observing connections within systems. Best practices for teaching with Gizmos are modeled. Access to Gizmos for K-6 teachers has been provided by Alberta Education. Teachers are encouraged to bring a device.

Join Valerie Miller to be introduced to Tree Teachings, Indigenous-authored science resources that combine Indigenous science and western science. Six resources have been (or are soon to be) developed looking at trees that span Canada and share significance to multiple Indigenous populations: Wáhta (Sugar Maple), Azaadi (Aspen), Giizhik (Cedar), Mitigomizh (Oak), Baapaagimaak (Ash) and Mashkiigwaatig (Tamarack). Explore the virtual resources and hands-on components developed by an Indigenous educator and a collective of Elders, Knowledge Keepers, Indigenous academics, scientists and educators.

In this session geared to Gr. 4-12, participants will discover how the University of Lethbridge, Red Deer Polytechnic and Actua reach Indigenous youth on a local and national level in different communities. We will explore tools and resources to enhance students’ experiential learning in STEM, as well as the infusion of digital skills and coding within and outside of STEM learning context, offering examples of classroom activities that can be easily incorporated using readily accessible materials.

This presentation introduces classroom teachers to effective platforms and strategies for teaching computer science to elementary students. We'll explore Code.org for interactive coding tutorials, Scratch for creating stories and games, and Lego Robotics for hands-on learning. Additionally, we'll cover offline, paper-based activities to ensure all students can develop computational thinking skills, regardless of technology access.

Teachers will be encouraged to bring a device to access some of these platforms and to explore how they look from the teachers perspective.
