A Gamut of Games for Science in Div III & IV Science to Teach Induction and Deduction

There are lots of fun ways to review the material that you've taught your students in science: games like Jeopardy and Who Wants to be a Millionaire or websites like Kahoot and Quizizz. But what about using games to really teach our students about making inferences through induction and deduction? In this session Nate will be quickly going over some games and playing some others with you; this way, by the time you leave, you'll have seen or played roughly twenty games to promote students' ability to make inferences in science. Note: Though some of these could be used in Div II, most of these games are best suited for Div III and IV.

Computational Thinking for Everyone

Please bring your own device in order to participate fully; this is a very hands on session! The goal of this session is to help K-12 educators learn about computational thinking (CT), how it differs in some ways and connects in other ways with computer science (CS) and how it can be integrated into a variety of subject areas. Some of the questions and activities will ask you to think about how you might approach things in your own classroom. I’ll provide lots of scaffolding and support to help you create a lesson in your own classroom that involves computational thinking.

Students develop a deeper sense of how a system works by interacting with variables and observing connections within systems. Best practices for teaching with Gizmos are modeled. Access to Gizmos for K-6 teachers has been provided by Alberta Education. Teachers are encouraged to bring a device.

Are you looking for an engaging, challenging and hands-on building activity for your class to help them understand the scientific concepts related to designing vehicle safety systems like seat belts, crumple zones and air bags? And do you also have basically no budget? Then this session is for you! Let Reuben and Brad, veteran science teachers and ATASC presenters, walk you through the Paper Car Contest, in which students design and build a car from a single sheet of photocopy paper and some simple, 3D printed wheels that can withstand a car crash and protect its egg driver.
