About me
Carla French specializes in K-8 mathematics teaching. She is currently a grade 7/8 late immersion math/science teacher and Learning Leader with the CBE, and a sessional instructor with the University of Alberta’s Campus Saint-Jean satellite program in Calgary. Carla is dedicated to helping teachers develop their mathematics pedagogy by developing a deep understanding of content and employing explicit teaching methods aligned with the Science of Learning research. Her focus is creating systematically sequenced lessons based on variation theory with the goal of reducing cognitive load and creating a truly inclusive learning environment where all students thrive. To enhance mathematics culture in elementary schools, Carla developed a school-wide program, Problem of the Week, that engages K-6 learners and teachers in systematically solving a series of increasingly difficult problems. The animated PowerPoint problems engage students while also developing teacher pedagogical content knowledge. Carla has also created and implemented a student-led noon-hour math club, a basic facts boot camp for grades 5-9, parent education events, has a YouTube channel LoveMath2 with Carla French dedicated to teaching a variety of math games, and is a Science of Math advocate.
Carla has a Master’s Degree in Educational Research focusing on Mathematics and Leadership. She holds a BEd in French Immersion teaching and a BComm in Finance with a Dance minor.
